Want to Art Journal?

Art journaling does NOT have to be an expensive venture if you're already engaged in digital scrapbooking. You can read about my start with art journaling in the article The Journey Into Art Journaling. Since there was limited space, I couldn't discuss everything, like all the supplies I've used.

Start by looking through your stash of digital scrapping supplies. Do you have brushes that "mist" or stamps with interesting textures? Do you already have plain papers, like kraft or just plain colors? You can take a perfectly fine piece of paper and "mess" it up by adding grunge brushes or mists. (See my example on the right.)This will give your paper a "used" or "aged" look. It can also provide texture, if the paper is flat.

You can also use free fonts, like ones at dafont.com. There are so many cool fonts you can download. These fonts can be used and colored to match your papers. You can also resize them or even mix them. (Example below.)

Paper: Chic n Sweet (ninigoesdigi)
Brushes: Keep Calm and Splatter On (Michelle Godin Designs)
Font: JoeHand2 and Broken74 (found on dafont.com)

This is just a simple example, but I just wanted to show that you can use any of your existing supplies and "alter" them to work for art journaling.

But, if you'd like to do a little retail therapy, you can find great bargains at some of the digiscrap stores. Here are a few finds (a very small sampling out of a lot that I found!) that cost $1 each (at the time of posting) and can be used for art journaling!

Artist Painted Papers from Kitty Designs
Love Grows from Kitty Designs
Funky Basics Cardstock from Weeds & Wildflowers
That Summer Feeling Doodles & Wordart from Weed & Wildflowers

Doodles & Brushes #1 from Crisdam Designs
Merry Christ-Mess from Theresa Hernandez
Remember, there are lots more out there if you'd prefer to use pre-made products!

In addition to the resources I found for my article, I found a few sites for those that are just starting to get into art journaling, like me. (These are not listed in any particular order - just click the images to go directly to the sites.)

I'll periodically post various things re: art journaling - just sort by using the "word cloud" in the right margin of this blog. Have fun creating art!
